A Brief History of Criminal Investigation Part 1

Private Investigation FAQ Graphic

Early innovations to methods of criminal investigation came about in Victorian England in the wake of the infamously unsolved Jack the Ripper case. Physician and creator of the most famous fictional detective in the world, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, founded a number of these techniques still used by modern detectives. Conan Doyle’s Sherlock was decades ahead of his time employing forensic techniques including blood splatter and ballistics analysis, fingerprints, footprints and, methods that seem common place today, like keeping a crime scene free of contamination. Until then, crime scenes were a thing of spectacle for passers-by who would trample through what should have been a restricted area. At this time, detectives and policemen began more thorough approaches to keeping these areas safe, making full and careful accounts of all items in and around the crime scene.

Historically, the man considered to be the Father of Private Investigation is Frenchman Eugene-Francois Vidocq. A man with a somewhat dubious past, Vidocq had access to the Paris underworld that uniformed officials did not. Monsieur Vidocq employed former convicts as investigators with the notion that “it takes a crook to catch a crook”.  Sometimes, he would have some of the individuals “arrested” and jailed in order to infiltrate a potential network within that prison. Another of Vidocq’s methods was the use of disguises and ruses while working certain cases. Vidocq also developed a database system of sorts: a collection of criminal intelligence and records, files of index cards with names and aliases, physical descriptions and arrest histories.
