I think my husband is hiding his growing drug problem.  What kind of investigation do I need to determine if he does or doesn’t have a drug problem?

There are a lot of ways to go about this type of investigation. I would recommend a combination of the three methods below:

Surveillance

Following your spouse to see where they go when they are not with you may be insightful. Drug deals, or “hand to hands” may be witnessed during a surveillance. It may also be helpful to see who they are around when they are buying or using drugs and in what environment.

Drug Sweep

If you can arrange having your spouse out of the house, it may be a advised to bring in a narcotics canine (K-9) to perform a drug sweep and detection of your home.

CCTV (Closed Circuit Television)

If you feel that your spouse is doing drugs at home it may be beneficial to install hidden cameras in the common areas of your home.  Common areas include kitchen, dining rooms, hallways, family rooms, home office, living room, etc.  Installing cameras in bedrooms, bathrooms and/or walk in closets are prohibited by law, because there’s a certain expectation of privacy there.

I want to keep track of my son while he’s away at college.  I’m interested where he goes off-campus.  Can I put a GPS on his car?

It depends . . .

  • If the vehicle is registered and owned by you, than yes.
  • If they are aware that the GPS is installed, than yes.
  • However, if the vehicle is owned and registered to your child, than the answer is no.

In order to have a GPS installed you have to have “permissible use” and ownership of the vehicle.  If you are unable to legally install a GPS unit on their vehicle, perhaps surveillance may be a better option.
